Do you know how many hours you spend on social media a day? Do you EVEN realize that you’re using social media when you’re on it? Social media has evolved to become a habitual, seemingly innate, normalcy within our society. We have become so accustomed to the prevalence of social media that were practically at the cusp of It being impossible to think about what life would be like without it. We, as a society, are blinded to the EXTREME concern of this phenomena.

Social media circumferences the composure of today’s ideology of humanity. Think about it, do you know a single person in our current generation who doesn’t have some form of social media account? It is a dominating aspect in our society, and it is continuously expanding and evolving. Our lives LITERALLY revolve around social media, it’s how most people communicate, obtain news, its primarily how we socialize. Yea, don’t get me wrong, its great having the ability to connect with others when you are unable to do so in person, BUT it has come to the point where people STILL use social media as a mode of socializing even if the person you’re communicating with is in the same room. By no means am I saying I am exempt from this issue, if anything the complete opposite. Talking to others through social media while I am in the same building occurs FREQUENTLY in my life. In fact, here lies one of the main issues, because it’s become such a normal thing to do that, I don’t have awareness of abnormality or the underlying concerns associated with my actions

Social media addiction is an existent issue which is overlooked by majority. Personally, I have become to the point where half the time I’m utilizing social media, I don’t even have conscious awareness of it. My body has become so fixated and habitude to technology usage encompassing social media platforms, I could close my eyes and text a full paragraph or open any social media app on command without even looking at the screen. An extensive number of hours could pass by while my productivity is solely circumference by the use social media without a doubt, question, or the the slightest bit of difficulty. We, as a society, have an extreme addiction to the constant use of social media. Unlike drug and alcohol addiction, social media addiction isn’t frowned upon because its normalized as its considered socially acceptable whereas other addictions are not.

The fundamental frameworks of Social media are identical to gambling. Social media is the source gratitude and satisfaction, which we, as humans, crave. Social media generates the flexibly to self-create in the ways desired by one-self. For instance, photographs, information regarding yourself, etc. are publicized under one’s own control.  Therefore, the way you wish to portray yourself to the public is manipulated to construe what one believes is the best version of themselves. Consequently, our self-satisfaction and gratification skyrockets because we are given the ability to shape the perceptions to enhance how others view in accordance to one’s personal preferability. This notion ties hand in hand with perceptions of actuality to be circumference by a fake reality because it alludes the enablement manipulations, misrepresentations, and false information. Pictures can be edited to alter how one actually looks, and falsely identifying through the utilization of photos of another individual. Also, information publicized is selective which allows info to be hidden, inaccurate, or bluntly made up. The principle driving the infatuation for self-creating is the gratitude derived from the positive feedback, responses, and attention from others. The likes, comments, shares received via social media is psychologically enhancing as it boosts self- esteem, and self-satisfaction. The principle of social media serving as an outlet for gratification and the psychological satisfaction is the correlation between gambling and social media.

Social media is implicitly detrimental to humanity, and as a society we lack acknowledgement as its justified as normality. Pratts speech To Kill an Indian, Save the Man directly correlates to the issue of social media in today’s society. Pratts speech governs the notion of whiteness constituting the sole characteristic of normality and the way of proper civilization. Therefore, the destruction of humanity by “killing the Indian” through mandating the removal of Indian culture is unnoticed and unconsciously aware. The mission to remove Indian heritage by instilling white culture is justified by the societal understanding of normality, which demonstrates the predominate blindness to the realistic issues promulgated, and the misconception of the “benefits”. Identical to the issue of social media, wherein humanity is facing implicit destruction, as society’s justification blinds the issue due to the false understanding concedes social media eliciting the proper and beneficial operations of society, rather than the exceedingly negative impacts imposed on society.
